Miss Mildred C. Marshall

Miss Mildred C. Marshall was the only daughter of the late Olen R. Marshall and Elsie Henderson Marshall.  Her grandfather, Mr. G.M. Marshall, served as attorney general for the second judicial court and as a member of the Tennessee Senate.  Her great-grandfather, Dr. Joseph Huffmeister, had the unique distinction of holding a commission as a medical doctor and surgeon for both the Confederate and Union armies during the War Between the States.  Miss Marshall's beloved brother, Olen H. Marshall. served as a state representative in both the 88th and 89th General Assemblies.

Miss Marshall was an uncommonly well-educated lady who held a bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University, two master's degrees from the University of Tennessee, and did additional graduate work at Syracuse University.  She was widely recognized for her contributions to both the Morristown and the Grainger County school systems and served for many years as director of guidance at Rutledge High School.  As a descendent of one of Grainger County's most historic families, Miss Marshall had a sincere interest in local history and served as County Historian for Grainger County.

During her life Miss Marshall donated much of her family's extensive historical book holdings to the Walters State library.

At the time of her testamentary gift, Miss Marshall became the largest private donor to the college. Her bequest has been used to fund the Olen Henderson Marshall Memorial Trust.  The earnings from this trust are used to fund the Olen H. and Mildred C. Marshall Memorial Scholarship.
