Lowell Luther Woods

Mr. Lowell Luther Woods graduated from the old Maury High School on the east side of Dandridge in 1955.  While Lowell was hoeing tobacco and putting up hay on the family farm in 95 degree weather and earning .20 cents an hour working for neighbors, Lowell's mother would say... "Now Lowell, you will not have to do this type of hard work when you grow up because you are going to college!"  Following graduation, with $842 in savings, Lowell's mother packed a cardboard suitcase with a half gallon of milk, a quart of pinto beans and some clothes.  Lowell hitched a ride with a milk truck driver who travelled to Knoxville each day.  The kind driver dropped off Lowell 10 blocks south of the University of Tennessee.  In 1960, Lowell received his Industrial Engineering degree and has since continued to work hard, live modestly, and invest wisely.

According to Mr. Woods, there were three primary reasons for establishing the Lowell Luther Woods Scholarship:
1.  To honor his parents who showed him the value of being frugal, humble and persistent.
2.  To complete a tithing promise he had made to God.
3.  To display his simple career path for duplication by future deserving Jefferson County High School students.
