Edward Franklin Porter

The Edward Franklin Porter Scholarship was established in 1995 as a testamentary gift from the estate of Edward Franklin Porter.  Mr. Porter attended elementary school in Newport and graduated from Central High School in Newport (forerunner of Cocke County High School) in 1933.  After high school, Edward attended Mars Hill College for one year before he received a scholarship to attend the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado.  Edward received his degree in metallugical engineering in 1940 and worked as a metallurgical engineer for several companies.  After his retirement in 1987, Edward returned to Newport and was active in civic and philanthropic activities until his death in 1993.
