Dean Darrell and Mary Simmons

Dr. Darrell Simmons began his career as a public school teacher in his native Arkansas and South Dakota before becoming a part of the industrial arts faculty at Memphis State University. In 1970, Dr. Simmons was one of the first staff members hired for East Tennessee's new community college, Walters State.  Dr. Darrell Simmons became the first dean of instruction at Walters State and received the honorary title of professor emeritus.  He was also named honorary life-time trustee of the Walters State Foundation.  A teacher first, Dean Simmons always characterized his close association with individual students as his greatest pleasure while serving his 41 years in education.
